This is Ranger, the new rescue pup. He's super-cute, super-sweet, super-fast, super-springy, and in order to stop him ending up as landfill, we're helping him look for a new home. See here if you can help!

There's one born every minute...

Sucker, that is. Pushover. Soft touch. That's me.
The usual long story short: got a call from the shire ranger. Dog in pound has long overstayed the allowed period, the boss says put him down. Ranger says he's a very sweet young dog and he hates to have to top him. Can we take him?

 
His vital statistics:

•  Story- stray, found hanging around in town. No owners forthcoming, not a pound regular.
  
• Gender- Male- entire, but won’t be as soon as I can get it sorted
• Breed- Border collie-kelpie cross, I think
• Looks- Black with white chest, prick ears, lovely glossy long short coat, or short long coat, take your pick. Much cuter than in these photos (taken in a hurry). Has a scabby wound (?clobbered by something/someone) in the middle of his forehead.
• Age- Somewhere between 6 and 12 months old- I think maybe 9-12-ish. Looks near full-grown, but very puppyish in behaviour (squats, submissive licking with other dogs)
• With other dogs- Good, friendly but respectful, offering to play after a few minutes
• With cats- Slightly interested, but not chasing or aggressive
• Handling- Very easily handled, not sensitive or handshy
• Manners- some- doesn’t jump up or climb on furniture, but doesn’t seem to know “sit” and pulls a bit on lead. Recalls easily to “puppy, puppy!”

We need another rescue like a hole in the head right now, but he is a really really cute little dog and I couldn’t let him get a bullet. So if you think you could offer him a nice home or know someone else who could, please let me know. He’ll come wormed and vaccinated and vet checked and castrated and very very happy to have a second chance.

Oh yeah, he needs a name- I’m thinking Perry… or Rossi… or Puck. Any suggestions?

This Charming Man

is desperately seeking a new home.



Musty (a name to which none of us are that attached) belongs to a relative who basically doesn't want him anymore. It's not Musty's fault, there's nothing wrong with him, he's just in the wrong place at the wrong time.


Yes, that's a slightly suspicious look- I'd just rocked up at his kennel with a dozen strange dogs running loose around me- but Musty's a cool kid, and made his introductions, offered to play and shared his leftover bones with them all. No noise, no fuss.


He's a "two and a bit" year old farm-bred kelpie (no papers), medium sized and athletic, a handsome dark solid red. He has basic training as a yard dog (barks and works the outside of a race) and is castrated. He's a happy, friendly, active boy who loves people, gets along well with other dogs, has no issue with other dogs, and has been visiting other farms and feedlots since he was a pup, so he's pretty well socialised and takes strange places, noises, dogs and people in his stride.



I don't think Musty's particularly fussy about what sort of home he finds- he just wants something to do and someone to do it with. He's a clever energetic young dog who just wants to please his people.

He would be a fantastic agility/obedience option for someone that wants to start training with a young adult, and with a little bit of basic education he'd make a great family dog for an active home. Or if anyone wants a great mate to give them a hand in the sheepyards, he's up for that too.

Can I interest you in a little 'erb?

Joking aside, I've finally come around to the fact that I should let Basil go.
I don't really need another 3sheep type dog, and realistically I don't have time to train him. He's not getting the attention he deserves, and he's such a lovely dog that I'm feeling really guilty about it. Some dogs absolutely love the farm dog life, but while Basil doesn't seem to mind (he's never known anything else) I think he'd be so much happier as a family dog, or at least as someone's best mate.

Basil was born on 4th August 2007, so he's 15 months old.
He's a medium sized (probably 52cmish), long coated black and white border collie, who still has his nuts (although that will change). His mother is our Ivanhoe Sally (Paton's Blaze x Woady Yallock Floss), and his father is a farm dog from Narembeen (Mick). Basil's littermates mostly live in Perth (Kriszty Cumming's Secret, Karen Phillips' Sonic, Gillian Self's Billy and Dave Sebbes' Slipper).

Basil is probably the most easy going of the litter- he's less barky and less cat obsessed anyway. He shares his siblings' complete disregard for personal safety, and I'm surprised he hasn't broken his neck running into a tree trunk yet. He is also a total cuddle-bunny, and will take any amount of tummy rubs and lap snuggles you can dish out. He walks well on lead, comes when he's called and is quiet in a crate, and he gets along well with all our other dogs, although he drives some of the others mad with bum-nipping when they run together.

We've started Basil on sheep, and he hits the head, breaks out wide and has a fairly natural stop. He is very biddable and tries really hard to get things right, and I'm sure he could do well for the right handler.



I'm not desperate to move Basil on, he's one of my favourite dogs around the place, but I really think he's wasted here. I'd love to see him go to a home where he'll get more one-on-one attention, so he can reach his full potential and be appreciated for the great little dog he is. So we're looking for a perfect permanent home for Basil- it might involve some sheepwork, some agility or obedience, but might be simply a pet home- as long as he's someone's mate first and foremost.







If you hear of anyone whose life is just missing some Basil, let me know. He's available to the right home for the cost of castration (sorry, Basil, but that's the deal).

This is Meeka, a very athletic, active 11 month girl who would be fantastic in an agility or dogsport home, or just as a companion in an active family. Believe it or not, she's a New Zealand Heading Dog x Border Collie- absolutely NO kelpie blood! She has an excellent sheepdog pedigree: bred by Ken Atherton, her father is Knight, a NZHD from top trialling lines, and her mother (Deej) is a Boylee Doug-Perengery Jill daughter (same litter as Danny, father of Ceilydh's pups).

Meeka just hasn't switched on to sheep yet- she probably will eventually, given enough time, but she'd be just as happy doing something else. She is an amazing jumper, very quick and keen to learn, walks nicely at heel and is very friendly with people and dogs.



























This little tacker is, well, a midget. He's a purebred working kelpie with a very nice pedigree, he's active and playful and very friendly, and rigorous targetted vet checks can find nothing wrong with him. He's just very small, and the vet thinks he's likely to stay very small. Might be a 400 agility dog ;)





















This is another really well-bred little kelpie man, but unfortunately he seems to have suffered some sort of brain injury at birth (sort of canine cerebral palsy), and moves a bit like he's had a few too many bevvies. The vet thinks he may improve as he ages, and he can certainly lead a happy, active life, but he'll never make a sheepdog, so he;s in urgent need of a pet home, where he can enjoy lots of snuggling and play.

Bonnie is the smaller, lighter coloured pup (the bone chewer and stalker), Chewy is the bigger boy pup, with the white feet (the crazy cavorting pup and stalkee).

My Christmas present- puppy breath!

I'd forgotten how sweet baby puppies are, at least in the short term, all that sweet puppy breath, podgy bods and reckless energy. Yes, there's the scratchy nails, the needle teeth, the poo and wee and heart-rending shrieking when they get upset, but for a few days at least, I love puppies!

Richard picked up the unwanted kelpie litter last week- one pup went direct to their new home, and the two most "out there" pups, boy and girl, now reside in their puppy pen on the back lawn. They are little crackers- fearless but with some common sense, very people focussed, love to cuddle, mad about tug toys, just sweethearts. They met sheep for the first time (scary but interesting- safest from between a person's legs), went to the vet for their vaccinations (terrifying!), and have enjoyed a few rides in the ute. They love their bones, shoes, other dogs and locusts to chase.

Hopefully they will find nice working homes (certainly well-bred for all-round farm dogs), or even agility/pet homes. If their aunt and uncle (Jessie and Buster) are any indication, they will be fantastic good-natured dogs, natural farm dogs and easy to train.

Koolie seeks home

Here's Patch (name open to improvement), she's 8mo and needs an experienced new owner who can make the most of her boundless energy and enthusiasm. She was found by the side of the road as a baby pup, taken on by an older couple who hoped for a quiet pet, and just ran them off their feet. She was taken to the local vets for euthanasia if no home could be found. She seems to have had no discipline or boundaries, and not a lot of exercise. In the last few days she's become much better at coming when called, but still wears a long line.

On the plus side- she's gorgeous (red merle with yellow eyes), petite, and friendly, gets along well with other dogs of all shapes and sizes, and impressed the vets during her temporary stay with her friendly nature with people and other animals.

Patch would make a great agility or obedience dog (or even flyball- she's small and likes toys), or an active pet for someone WITH EXPERIENCE and time to commit to training (which she desperately needs). She'll be available for the cost of desexing.
