Most two year olds have family outings to the zoo, or the park, or the beach.
Our two year old gets to spend his weekends at the edge of a dusty paddock, watching the perpetual duel between "woofwoof" and "maamaa".
He sleeps in a caravan instead of his own bed. He gets woken up at dawn, and stays up around a campfire until late at night. He gets filthy, he gets tired, he gets bored. And sometimes I feel terribly guilty about it all.
But he is also learning important skills, like how to be a leader,
how to adapt to new environments and make his own fun.
He gets fed well (the kitchen girls' hot toasties),
And not so well (his mum's cooking).
And he's discovering joy in the simplest things, and how to touch the sky.
Isn't that what toddlerhood is all about?
Best of all, as the smallest member of the trialling community, he's growing up in the arms of a special extended family.
And at the end of the day, if it all gets too much for him, there's always somewhere comfy to crash!

The pictures of your son and the commentary is precious, especially the ones of him in the crate! Just adorable!
Well he could grow up sitting in front of a TV playing a play station games or he could hang around the streets like so many other kids. Wow to grow up around sheepdogs and trials, how good would that be. There is nothing better than growing up on a farm, with animals and caring people. lm sure that he will look back and treasure the memories that he will have of sleeping in the caravan, making paper planes and the wonderful people he has met. He is a very lucky boy.
